Unwavering Solidarity: Standing by Human Rights Defenders (HRDs)

We celebrate International Human Rights Defenders Day this year in unison with the rest of the world. This day honors the selfless efforts of individuals who give their all to the promotion and protection of human rights, frequently putting their own security and lives in danger to guarantee that everyone has access to freedom, equality, and justice.

Celebrating Human Rights Defenders day is of utmost significance as it recognizes and acknowledges the immense contributions of individuals and groups who tirelessly advocate for human rights. These defenders play a crucial role in protecting and promoting the fundamental values of justice, equality, and dignity for all.

The impact and intrinsic worth of human rights in our society are brought to light on human rights defenders day. It enables us to consider the core values—such as the freedom of expression, the right to life, and the absence of discrimination—that guide our shared humanity. We recognize the vital role human rights defenders play in defending these rights and promoting their universal application by honoring them.

This day, provides an opportunity to honor the bravery and perseverance of these individuals who fight for justice in the face of adversity. Many defenders face significant risks, including threats, violence, and harassment, yet they remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding human rights. By celebrating their efforts, we not only show our appreciation but also inspire others to join in the fight for justice and equality.

In an effort towards contributing to the protection and promotions of the rights of HRDs, this year, HRCU has conducted networking forums, community engagements in Kitgum district between youth HRDs, duty bearers and other key stakeholders with the aim of enhancing access to justice for young people and raising awareness on the role of youth HRDs and their work in the district.

HRCU continues to closely work with the Uganda National NGO Bureau to ensure that the right to freedom of association for HRDs in Uganda is upheld.

We therefore, implore Government of Uganda to carry duties such as; enacting progressive legislation that promotes the work of HRDs and policies that guarantee their overall safety and security.

Let us reaffirm on this day that we will defend those who defend human rights. Together, we can build a society that values human dignity and upholds everyone’s freedoms and rights.

Happy International Human Rights Defenders Day 2023
